Youth Scholarship Recipients
Nanga supports the development of young and aspiring artists. In 2019 this focus has led to three recipients of our Youth Scholarship.
This scholarship gives our recipients the opportunity to mentor with one of Nanga's artists. These collaborations, when they reach the stage, can be inspiring - for the recipients, the mentors as well as the entire Nanga community.
Congratulations to our 2019 recipients below:

Charlie I've had a love affair with music since I was seven. Now, I'm an avid songwriter, keen to play and share my music with others. The spark of connection that music ignites is what drives me to write and perform.
I've busked for years in Fremantle but I've never performed any professional gigs before. I'm always keen to jam with and learn from other musicians. Music is an integral form of self-expression. Finding an encouraging environment where you can bare your soul is hard; finding keen listeners is harder. This is exactly why I’m excited to be a recipient of the Nanga Youth Scholarship. |
My name is Sofia Hourani, I’m 15 and I go to Fremantle College. I have grown up listening to all sorts of genres like classical, jazz, musical theatre and pop.
I only started writing songs this year and am still exploring how I can tell stories through my music. I love to tell stories through song and help people listen to important things as well as trying to retell other people’s stories and doing them justice. I was fortunate enough to land a gig at Fairbridge this year through winning the Fairbridge Songwriting Quest. I look forward to having a mentor and gaining some more experience in performing. I also heard from a previous recipient that Nanga's Youth Scholarship is an amazing opportunity and experience. |
Tex Holmes I’m a 13-year old percussion student at John Curtin. I’ve always had a love of music and have eclectic music tastes and styles. My song writing is influenced by many iconic, and some lesser known artists, predominantly Australian, from a range of genres. My songs range from punchy, surf rock to a more paired back, melodic sound with acoustic arrangements. I am a multi-instrumentalist who enjoys changing things up by experimenting with new and classic genres.
